Editor’s Note:
While researching community-led tourism in Oaxaca, I found myself thinking less about destinations and more about preparation. This reflection explores how the way we prepare, both practically and mentally, can shape the way we experience a place long before we ever arrive.
After learning more about Zapotec Travel’s philosophy, I kept coming back to one thought.
Meaningful travel doesn’t begin when we arrive.
It begins long before we ever board the plane.
I believe it starts with the choices we make before we even leave home.
When we think about preparing for a trip, it’s easy to focus on logistics: booking flights, packing luggage, checking into hotels, and making it through airport security on time.
Those preparations matter, and they deserve our attention.
But while reading about community-led tourism in Oaxaca, I began to wonder whether preparation meant more than simply organizing the logistics of a trip.
Around the same time, I noticed conversations within the travel industry about purposely arriving at the airport as late as possible. While the idea may sound exciting, travel professionals continue to recommend allowing plenty of extra time before departure. Rushing through an airport often adds unnecessary stress and increases the risk of missing a flight.
That made me realize something.
Perhaps preparing well isn’t just about catching your flight.
It’s about creating the space to begin your journey with intention.

For me, that preparation usually happens in two parts.
One prepares us for the practical realities of travel, while the other prepares us to experience a place with curiosity and intention.
Prepare Your Logistics
- Pack intentionally so you’re only bringing what you’ll actually need
- Download maps, tickets, and important travel documents for use offline
- Review local transportation options before you arrive
- Leave enough time at the airport to begin your journey without rushing
These simple decisions don’t just make travel easier.
They create room for curiosity instead of stress.
Prepare Your Mindset
- Learn a few phrases in the local language
- Spend a little time learning about the history, culture, and traditions of your destination
- Familiarize yourself with local customs and etiquette
- Stay open to experiences that may be different from what you’re accustomed to
The goal isn’t to become an expert before you arrive.
It’s to arrive ready to learn.
The airport isn’t where your journey begins.
It simply marks the moment when your preparation becomes visible.
Long before we step onto the plane, we’ve already begun shaping the kind of traveler we’ll be when we arrive.
If meaningful travel begins before we arrive, then perhaps the first destination isn’t a place at all.
It’s the mindset we choose to bring with us.
